Where is Yucatan? Julius Shulman Photographs Chichen Itza, The Getty Iris (2015)

Written for the Getty's online magazine, this piece examines photographs of the ancient Maya site of Chichen Itza taken by Californian architectural photographer Julius Shulman. Examining the photographs alongside accompanying writings on the Yucatan by critic Esther McCoy published in the Los Angeles Time Home Magazine, I underscore the work of these photographs in selectively framing Mexico's ancient past and folkloric present for the modern Californian consumer. These photographs simultaneously echo Shulman's famous visual approach to California's modernist architecture and illustrate Mexico’s anachronistic place within California’s emergent modernity.
